Everything You Need to Know about Travel to Botswana…Safari in Botswana.World Class African Safaris, Exclusive Wildlife Viewing From the Okavango Delta to Chobe National Park, Experience the Magic of Independent Camps and Ultra-Luxury Travel.A safari in Botswana is unlike any other African safari destination. The Okavango Delta is a world-class attraction for exclusive wildlife viewing while the private game concessions around Chobe National Park are so large their scale incomprehensible. Hi, my name is Jeremy Allen and I’m Managing Director at Wild Safari Africa. Botswana is perfect for those wanting to escape into the wilds. Because the country has adopted a policy of low impact, high cost tourism vast tracks of wilderness have been left in pristine and exclusive condition. Now doesn’t this sound like something you’d be interested in? Botswana’s exclusivity lies in the fact that its land is divided into private concession areas that are quite large and typically home to 1 or 2 luxury camps for the entire area. With such small numbers of visitors in these very large areas of wilderness this also means there will usually be no more than 3 vehicles out at any given time. In other words, you’ll have a real wilderness feel keeping all wildlife sighting to yourself. A true wilderness experience! Generally in these areas you are allowed to drive off road allowing visitors to approach very closely to the animals and in most areas you can do night drives allowing the opportunity to see additional animals that are rarely, if ever, seen during the day. Botswana is possibly home to the largest circuit of independent safari camps, lodges and services. This circuit offers guests access to ALL the key areas of northern Botswana; Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve, Chobe National Park, Makgadikgadi /Nxai Pans, and Central Kalahari. Because of Botswana’s low density approach, camps are in beautifully remote locations and most safaris usually involve short flights on small airplanes traveling from camp to camp. Botswana’s safari camps are comfortable and often offering a luxurious experience in the African bush. They all use open 4WD safari vehicles and professional guides and trackers to ensure a rich wildlife experience. No matter where in Botswana you choose to travel one thing is guaranteed, you’ll see huge areas of vast, untamed wilderness teeming with wildlife. Beware it’s not cheap but can be of great value (sign up below and I’ll reveal how to safari Botswana for 1/2 the cost!) Most trips include meals, a wide variety of activities (traditional canoe (mokoro) rides, game drives and walks, and much more) laundry services, and park fees. Yes, Botswana comes at high costs but you get what you invest and that is an exclusive wildlife experience and pristine environments virtually all to yourself. If you’re looking to relax and relieve stress doesn’t this sound like the place you’d want to be? A safari in Botswana is a dream destination that can easily combine a visit to Victoria Falls or other nearby countries such as South Africa or Namibia. I am planning an Okavango Delta safari sometime in 2012 for 12 days. What is the best time of year to visit and is this trip too short? I am interested in wildlife photography.
Hi David,
There is really no bad time of year for Okavango Delta safaris as long as you avoid places that have the chance of being affected by the seasonal floods. The floods have been especially large the past few seasons.
June through October is the best season for all around wildlife viewing in the Okavango Delta. December through March the area is lush, bursting with green life sprouted by the onset of the rains. Many animals have migrated to the area in search of water, and the bird life is prolific. This is one of my absolute favorite times of year as calving is underway and sighting big cat hunting’s are common.
The majority of lodge chains drop their high season rates on November 1st and begin their significantly lower green season rates. The rains could start during this time however the water levels in the Okavango Delta will be at their annual low leaving large open flood plains with grasses to draw in large herds of game to give you wonderful wildlife viewings.
12 nights is enough time to safari in Botswana. This is about the average length of most visitors. You can easily divide your time between the Okavango Delta and Chobe.
One thing is certain, Okavango Delta safaris never disappoint.
Jeremy, thank you for the information and the very detailed response you sent in email. I look forward to my safari in Botswana!
